Not the result I came for but in the end I am happy I fought hard to reach that finish line.
The race distances were shortened due to the extreme heat and the bad air quality. The days prior to the race you could feel that. So in the end it was a good decision by the organization: health is still more important than performance. Still, I wasn’t able to perform at my best level for the whole race.
The swim (1st out of the water) and bike portion (1st in T2 with a solid lead) were pretty good, although I felt not 100% from the beginning. On the run I could almost feel immediately that my body was done under these conditions ... That 30km run became a real survival run for me with plenty of stops at aid stations and showers to try and get my body going again. As a result my run split was far too slow to take the victory this year.
Congrats to James (1st) and Kevin (2nd) and all the finishers! Respect, under these circumstances.
See you in 2020 for a new edition.
