5th at IRONMAN 70.3 Campeche

My first race of the year brought me some really good and some bad as well. What looked as the perfect race, ended with only a 5th place. I was leading the race till km 7 on the run but ran out of fuel ...

I came out of the water in 2nd after a choppy and long swim. I was able to put some advance on my main contenders, which felt really good. On my brand new Cervelo P5disc I rode hard and steady from the start. See my graph attached. The only thing that went wrong in this part, was loosing my front bottle with energy and salts. But I was convinced I could handle it with only one bottle as well. And on the bike it worked, 2min30 advance on 2nd and over 4min on 3rd after 90km in just under 2h. Perfect.

But from transition 2 and the first kilometers on the run, I felt not as usual ... The last years I run 1/2 marathons in 1h13-1h15 , Sunday I ran a 1h27. A total melt down and I was only able to finish.

So, I payed for the lack of sodium, in the run part in these tropical circumstances and high temps. From tests I know I'm a 'Salty sweater' and it's proven again ...

Another lesson for the next one, Ironman Lanzarote on 25th of May.

See you soon.
