Last Saturday I finished 9th in a time of 7h53’43” at Ironman Texas. I was able to better my personal best with almost 7min and going Sub-8h, for the first time in my career. But, I’ve also learned that this kind of race (fast, flat course where it’s very hard to make a difference on the bike), is not showing my full potential. And at some point it was loud and clear that everything would be decided during the marathon.

The day started really good with a 49min swim in Lake Woodlands (non-wetsuit). Never in trouble and a good position in a big leading group.

About the bike portion there’s a lot to say and said, I’ll try to keep it short. Eventhough I felt strong enough to make a difference, a group of 12 stayed together till 2nd transition… My bike split was 4h10 , incl. 3 extra kilometers (Ruedi Wild and I took the wrong way, when we were both riding in the front of the big group). A 25km long pursuit to rejoin the front group was hard but succesful. It gave me the confidence to try to leave the group behind… tried several times, but that didn’t work! Not for me, for nobody! Very frustrating situation!

My 2h48 marathon was solid but nothing more. I could definitely feel the extra effort to come back, in the early stages of the bike course, when I was running.

To conclude: happy with my time and fitness. Qualification for Hawaii (Oct 13th) in the pocket and even more ready now to prepare for my next Ironman France (June 24th).

Time for some rest and recovery!
