I am sure anyone will understand it has not been easy to recuperate both physically and mentally after my disappointing performance in Hawaii in just 2 weeks. However, I did manage, which in all leaves me with a positive feeling about starting the winter season.
But about to the race! First and foremost, I would like to thank the organising team and IRONMAN for this fantastic new race, a true challenge in a marvellous decor, highly recommended! Right after the start of the swim, I felt strong. Without a wetsuit, 2 rounds with 'Australian exit', 24°C seawater… ideal circumstances. I finished this leg in second position, and after just 5 kilometres on the bike, I took the lead. It did take me about 30 km though, at the start of the climbs, before I really was able to leave the group behind me. After 90 kilometres I reached T2 in first position, with the first pursuer 4 minutes behind. A safe margin to start the half marathon. I maintained my advantage comfortably, and won in a total time of 3h53min. My splits: 21min – 2h11min – 1h17min.
All my plans and new challenges for 2016 are starting to take shape… I will keep you posted over the coming weeks and months! For now, I am taking a break to rest up and spend some quality time with my family.
See you soon,
Frederik
